Riley- Student Writing #5- FINAL
Sweat trickled down his forehead into his eyes, stinging them and making it difficult to see. It was getting hotter with every second, and he was still making little progress. Time was running out. He knew in that moment, there was only one thing he could do to get her out alive.
Thirty minutes later, Camden lay in bed thinking, still groggy from the night before. He started work in less than an hour. Something he wasn’t looking forward to. Suddenly an alarm echoed through the streets, startling Camden, rousing him from his day dream.
Camden had been a volunteer fire fighter in his small rural district for two years now. With his family growing and his community not exactly ideal, he had felt obligated to do his part to improve things.
He scrambled out of bed. Still partially clothed, he quickly slipped on some jeans and put on his boots. scurrying, he hastily grabbed some chewing gum, the sugar helping to calm his nerves and he pocketed his lucky pen knife He then dashed out the door and at full pace, made his way down the street to the local fire department, situated a few blocks away.
When he arrived, John, the fire chief, was already there putting on his uniform. “Where’s the fire?” Camden asked, panting from his run. “No fire, it’s a car accident near the old Milford place” replied John. As he was finishing his sentence the other two volunteers turned up. “Get your gear, we’ll get ready on the way” the chief ordered. Once they had all boarded the fire truck, the sirens were turned on and they raced out of the fire station and headed to the crash site.
