A Picture of Freedom-One-Eliza

Pages: 1-15

Author: Patricia C. McKissack

The main character is a slave in a big plantation house. She knows how to read and write but her owners don’t know. She wakes up early every morning to write in her diary. The diary is how know the story. Her mom died when she was very little. She lives in the attic with Aunt Tee, Uncle Heb, and Hince. Hince is like her older brother almost, they joke and tease. Uncle Heb is kind of almost like her grandpa. Aunt Tee is like her mom. Her  mom died 5 years ago.

I think that she is very brave. I think that it is amazing that she is courageous enough to keep a diary. I think that it is very interesting how she learned to read. When her mistresses are doing homework she has to fan them. She learns while fanning them because they are about the same age as her so they are learning how to read and sounding things out. I am scared for her because if she gets caught then she would be whipped. They way the girl throws “that means you get the whip” is very scary like she gets it a lot. I believe that slavery is one of the darkest thing in Americas history.

  1. Eliza,
I so agree with you about this being one of the darkest periods of our history. There were some amazing people who tried to make changes, who tried to stand up for themselves and others, and I love to read about them. It’s also hard to understand the level of hatred and the hurtfulness that some people attack others with. Learning to read would have been a small act of freedom, doing something for yourself that could possibly better your condition.
