Dear Mrs. Gibson,

Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus

Dusti Bowling

Book Pages 1-44

Summary: Aven is girl born without arms. She shows how she does everyday things without arms. Her dad got a job application in Arizona and she has to leave everything behind her friends, her school, even most of her stuff. When she gets there, she was hot very hot. The place was hot and dusty. Aven walked around the town and got some soccer practice in. She went to school and got some stares but she was used to it.

Response: This book is amazing, I love how it shows how she gets around her everyday life without arms. When she was a kid she never noticed she was different until a boy screamed about her arms falling off. At school she would always make up crazy stories about her arms. Every time there was a new kid her friends knew what was coming. They asked about her arms and she told some crazy story about how they got burned or eaten by a crocodile. They all believed her of course but her friends spoiled it. Her school did not believe she could do stuff, but she proved them wrong.

Sincerely,

Anna McQueary

  1. Hi Anna,
What an interesting topic for the novel! She sounds like a great character. We always underestimate folks who have some sort of disability. I’m watching a show called See where all humans have gone blind from a virus. It’s really interesting to think how this would change things.
