Hello Ms. Gibson,

Treasure Island

Robert Louis Stevenson

Page 86 to Page 182 (End of the book)

Summary:

This portion of the book is about how Jim sails on the ship and the adventures he has on the way. While Jim lands on the island where the treasure is buried, he realizes that there are 18 pirates aboard his ship. Once the good guys are going to dig up the treasure, the pirates were going to kill the good guys and take the ship and treasure. Jim warns all the good guys about this and they have many battles with the pirates before the pirates catch malaria. The good guys take the ship back and take off, leaving the pirates either marooned or dead.

Response:

I like how the author uses adjectives to describe what the characters are feeling and thinking. I enjoyed how the author used the five senses to describe what they are feeling. For example, when the good guys get into the barracks that they are going to fight the pirates in, it describes how the wind would kick up sand and “the sand would be in our food and in our eyes.” I enjoyed how the author would include the characters’ thoughts, like when Long John Silver says, “He would be worth more as a hostage than dead.” Jim thought, “I instantly knew that Long John Silver had lost his truce.” Another example is when Jim steals the boat under the rock and goes to the ship to cut it loose, he knew he shouldn’t have done it, but he did anyway. Overall, I liked how this book was written and the suspense that the author used between the protagonists and the antagonists.

Sincerely,

Matthew Whitworth

  1. Hi Matthew,
Great quotes and references to the description using senses. It does help you to be able to feel you’re right there in the action.
