Hello Ms. Gibson,

The Call of the Wild

Jack London

Pages 1 to 106

Summary:

In this book, Buck the dog starts off with a family, and a home. He is a happy 140lb. St. Bernard-Scotch Collie mix. However, he gets kidnapped by the gardener and goes through a series of bad owners. He is starved, overworked, and beaten. He gets angry at the other dogs and his cruel owners. He learns how to survive frigid winter nights and how to lead to a pack of sled dogs.

Response:

I like how the author wrote this book. This book talks about Buck’s adventures and it follows him along his journey. It talks about what Buck felt and what he knew was going to happen. It talks about his journey from going from a loving dog to becoming a dog-sled runner to becoming the head of a pack of wolves. I disliked how Buck stayed with the wolves at the end of the book. It would’ve been nice for him to return back to his original family. I wish the book talked a little bit more about what happened to some of the characters after they passed through Buck’s life. This book is organized into named and numbered chapters, and has a table of contents to get to a chapter easily. I like how the chapters break up the timeline into certain events.

Sincerely,

Matthew Whitworth

  1. Hi Matthew,
So you’d prefer that he stay in the safe environment of humans?? The book’s titled The Call of the Wild!! Do you think the author would prefer that Buck return to the wilds to live out his life rather than a cozy and safe life??
