The Relationship of Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher

In the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Becky and Tom’s relationship started out with Becky as the new girl in school and Tom having a girlfriend.  The first thing that Tom did is break up with his girlfriend for Becky. “A lovely little blue eyed creature with yellow hair plaited into two long tails, white summer frock and embroidered pantalettes (Twain 22). This is Tom’s first thoughts when he sees Becky at Jeff Thatcher’s house. At that moment Tom knew he wanted to date her instead of Amy, and he did not even know who she was. When he found out she was in his class he was ecstatic. Once Becky started to notice Tom he acted like she was not even there and just showed off  just to impress his new crush. In their relationship I think there are some very childish things that they did but some adult things they did and had to do.

I think their relationship was childish in some ways like Tom not talking to her and just trying to impress her and do things he thinks only he can do. I also think that getting “engaged”  when they are like in 5th grade and only been dating for a week is really childish in the way that they are trying to live their fantasy of being with each other forever and not being realistic. “y\You…just tell a boy you won’t ever have anybody but him, ever ever ever, and then you kiss and that’s all” (Twain 22). This quote is Tom explaining to Becky what being engaged is like and why she should and he wants her to kiss him. “Oh Tom, Then I ain’t the first you’ve ever been engaged to” (Twain 75). This is a quote from Becky when she found out that Tom was engaged to somebody before her, and she cried and ran off. I think it was childish of both of them because Tom said you can only love one person and then said something about Amy. I also think it was silly of Becky to cry and run off like that even though he said she was the only one he loved and I think she should recognize that.

I think for how young Tom and Becky are they had some adult-like things they did. Tom taking the blame for Becky on things that she did and him being okay with getting hit and in trouble for it showed how much he loved Becky, and I think that was very mature of him. I also think it was very mature of Becky to give him a second chance and realize he is good for her and loves her. It was also very mature of Tom when they were in the cave together and he protected her and gave her food. I think they actually love each other and have a good relationship. I think she is one of the few people who understand Tom. I really hope and think if they get married if they created a book in later days.

Becky and Tom had a lot of childish things they did and some very mature and Adult like stuff. I think they have a very strong relationship and they seem to understand each other. Tom will always love her no matter what happens and that shows in the book and that is a good quality to have. Their relationship is always going to be rocky, but if they leave the childish stuff behind they will be good.
