Tom and Becky

In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Tom and Becky’s relationship changes throughout the story. In the beginning, Becky and Tom loved each other and in fact, were going to be engaged. In the middle, however, both of them weren’t loyal and went to be with other people. After they were both trapped in the cave, in the end, they came together again. Tom and Becky’s friendship remained throughout the whole story in my opinion, and they were always kind and mature when it came to their relationship.

A few of the moments when this maturity showed was when Tom let himself be punished for ruining the book instead of Becky, when he took partial credit for getting them lost in the cave, and when Tom felt sorry and remorseful. A couple of times, however, Tom and Becky were pretty childish. Like the time when they thought kissing was being engaged, or the time when Tom showed off for Becky by doing backflips and standing on the fence.

Their relationship was similar to how couples act today. Showing off, trying to make each other jealous, and giving each other gifts are behaviors most couples use today. When Tom started going out with Amy again, Becky thought the only thing left for her to do was to do the same. She started going out with Alfred to make Tom jealous, and it worked. After Tom took the blame for Becky when she said, “Tom, how could you be so noble!”(Twain 191). Tom and Becky I think had real feelings for one another and not just little kid crushes. They took the fall for each other, showed love and affection, and Tom, at least, gave her gifts.

` Tom and Becky were also a little childish when it came to being boyfriend and girlfriend. This can be expected because they’re children. Although showing off and bringing gifts is not childish, the way they did these things was. Like when Tom gave Becky a frog and a brass doorknob, or the time where they thought kissing meant they were engaged. The way Tom showed off to get Becky’s attention was also not mature. He stood on a fence and walked across it, did summersaults, and tried to look like he wasn’t even noticing Becky. Becky did the same, in the sense that she acted like she didn’t care. “For she tossed a pansy over the fence a moment before she disappeared” (Twain 23). In conclusion, Tom and Becky are childish and adult in their relationship.
