DP camps (comes up on black screen and then fade into picture)

(fade in)Displaced Persons Camps (DP camps) were where Jewish people went after liberation after the war. Of all the displaced persons after the war Jewish people were a small percentage. (picture of DP camps)

Some Jews thought the DP camps were fine because at least they didn’t have to worry about death by gas chamber, starving, etc (page 80). (picture of gas chamber)

Even though Jews were in little danger of being gassed there was little change in the way they were treated. (classic holocaust pic)

In most DP camps people were underfed. They were given a certain amount a day and usually were fed dry bread. (starved people)

Camps were also overcrowded, for example a former German military barracks built for 2,500 people was filled with 4,500 DPs (page 85). (overcrowded pic)

Along with a shortage of food there was also a shortage of medicine and education in the camps. (camp pic)

There was very little education in DP camps, due to few books, supplies, classrooms, and teachers (page 83). (education picture from DP camp)

Some camps did have education and DPs were required to go to school. At camps there were often training classes for hairdressers, nurses, electricians, tailors, and other tradespeople (page 100). These prepared DPs for their life ahead of them after the camps.(…)

Few camps had good medicine, but most DP camps had poor medical facilities, so the spread of disease was rampant and especially among new arrivals to the camps (page 99). (medical facilities from camp)

Many DP camps were old concentration camps and were a painful reminder to their Jewish inhabitants. (concentration camp)

Wanting to leave all pain behind many Jewish people want to get to the US zone of Germany and travel to America from there, so they could start their second life (page 82). (pic of the US zone)

Most Jewish DPs had little hope that any family member of theirs was still alive (page 28). Many Jews checked survivor boards everyday to see if they had family alive (page 155). (person checking the survivors board)

There were some happy times during the years of DP camps. Some groups celebrated birthdays (page 97). There were about 20 wedding a day some of the largest DP camps (page 154). DP camps had the highest birthrate of any Jewish community. Jews were trying to rebuild their population (page 154). (happy times, birthdays, weddings, baby)

In the end, Jews spent as little as a few months in a DP camp or sometime more than a few years (page 66). (DP camps/ people/person/…)
