Riley- Reading Letter #1 (4th Quarter)

I just read the first 85 pages of the book Copper Sun by Sharon M. Draper. This book focuses on slavery from a young enslaved teenager taken from her home in Africa. Her name is Amari. A “tribe” of white men come to her African village and befriend the people of her tribe, and then later kills many of them and captures the young, and strong teenagers. As Amari is taken over sea’s to Charleston, South Carolina for sale, she realizes the trials and tribulations of becoming a slave and the harsh treatment they recieve including being branded, molested, packed on shelves in the boat, and cruely treated.

Copper Sun is a wonderful book to reflect on mainly because slavery is still today, and was a very historical matter brought to hand by the general public. Throughout the story i continuously wondered if Amari knew what savery was in the first place, because the story provided evidence that she made a friend named Afi, on the way to the Carolina’s that introduced her to the horrors of slavery. This provides information to know if Amari, had previously met a white male. In the story, i found it quite incredible because Amari was branded with a metal iron for the first time on the sand on a beach and thrown in a holding cell. 5 minutes later, the whites had turned on some of the other whites as well, and the same man that branded Amari was thrown into the holding cell as well. This makes me wonder what a group of white people are attempting to acheive if they plan to sale another group of white people to the general public of white and caucasian people! Is it just a marketing attempt? Something I enjoyed from the story was that Amari’s friend Afi, was comforting but she was also very straight forward. She was honest with Amari about the horrors of slavery, and in those times I think that was the best for young Amari. Hopefully throughout the rest of the book, we find what is to come of young Amari. Will she be sold to a white man? Will she escape? And more importantly, will she survive it all, or choose death as an alternate?…..
