Food’s Not Food Until it’s on the Table- Kelley

This was his one way to survive. He had no job, no pay, no supermarket. Only a gun and a horse. He was an 19th century mountain-dweller who feasted on wild animals. All day, every day he was hunting for something to eat. Most days he killed something, whether it be a rabbit or a goat. But on one particular day, he had very bad luck.

As soon as the buckeroo set out, his horse reared up on his hind legs and started running at full speed. It took Thom a whole hour to get her calmed down. With that much of the day wasted, and lost in an unexplored area of his mountains, Thom was frantic to find some food. He rode around for hours before he found anything. Then from a distance he saw a goat. The goat was a large one, too. It was a clear shot, but a risky one, considering it was right at the edge of a snowy cliff. If Thom shot now, the goat might fall beyond reach and the loud gunshot would ruin his chances to find anymore game. Thom thought about this, but it was nearing sundown and he needed some food. He takes the shot. The goat falls. Out of sight.
When Thom rides up to the dead animal, he sees that it will be impossible to claim. The goat was right by a ledge when it was shot and fell onto a small overhang. Beneath the overhang was a hundred foot drop. Thom didn’t want to risk his own life for a goat, so he slept in the mountains without dinner and went home the next day. Thom went on with life after the occurrence, but never forgot that unlucky day.
