Ronnie, short for Veronica, and her brother, Jonah, are forced to spend the entire summer with her dad, who left them and their mother 3 years ago. Ronnie meets Will, a beach volleyball player and aquarium volunteer, and they become very close. Just when Ronnie is starting not to regret having to come see her dad, she is hit with the terrifying news that her father has terminal cancer. This book tells about a girl’s difficult summer and growth between her and her father.
Ronnie is a 17-year-old girl who doesn’t listen to her mom or dad. She reminds me of some teenagers who think that they can do whatever they want. When Ronnie was a little girl, she was a very talented piano player, but ever since her dad left them, she swears that she will never play again. Regretting coming to North Carolina to see her father, Ronnie meets Blaze and her boyfriend Marcus, who has an eye on Ronnie. A few days later, Ronnie finds a raccoon trying to eat turtle eggs. So, vegetarian Ronnie sleeps outside to protect them and meets Will, the same hot-headed beach volleyball player that ran into her just a few days before. Ronnie and Will spend the summer together. Ronnie is arrested for stealing, but it was Blaze is the one that set her up. I feel bad for Ronnie because she might go to jail for what Blaze did to her. Many things happen over the summer, and Ronnie finds out that her dad isn’t well. He has terminal cancer and won’t live to see Christmas. Ronnie and her little brother, Jonah, are terrified. Jonah has to go back to New York for school, but Ronnie stays with her father because she isn’t going to college. I would be so worried staying with my dad, knowing any moment might be his last. After finally playing the piano for her father, he passes away.
