Dear Mrs. Gibson,
Lost Boy
Dracy Rosenblatt
Pages 1-180

Summary: In the book I’m reading, Lost Boys, the main character is Reza, a 12 year old boy who loves music. His father died in the war going on between Iran and Iraq about land and his mother is distant from Reza and despises music other than religious music. His Uncle Habib is a big fan of music and sneaks music for Reza to listen to. His Uncle Habib is in a club that doesn’t agree with the war and the people in that club are shot. Reza doesn’t want to go to war but his best friend, Ebi does. Since there is no point in staying home after his Uncle Habib gets shot and his mother doesn’t socialize with him anymore, he decides to go into the war. They get on the ride to go to war and when they arrive they start training. Soon after they finish training they go into war, they soon realize that the younger ones are only there to be a shield for the ones who can actually fight. It gets too late and they get hurt, Reza wakes up in a hospital and realizes that he is a prisoner of Iraq. He got separated from Ebi.

Response: This section of the book was very emotional for the Reza. The friendship of Reza and Ebi is one of my favorite things in the book. Ezra was only 12 and must’ve been terrified in the camp. I hate how they were just using the little boys as shields. The parents didn’t even know that their kids were being used as shields or else they would’ve never sent them. When Reza’s Uncle Habib died from getting shot, Reza was devastated because he was the only one who really understood how Reza felt. After being in the explosion and losing consciousness, Reza was so confused after waking up in the hospital. He goes into the camp and almost all the kids there were older than him. Then he realizes that Eli wasn’t among them and got anxious.

  1. Hey Alysa,
It sounds as if his friend may have died from what you wrote. Will he be able to overcome that? War us such a terrible thing.
