EF-4 Ballod – Matthew Whitworth

EF-4

By: Matthew Whitworth

The date was May 28, 2018,

It had been a perfect KC day,

We had golfed in the morning

and headed to our AirB&B for our night’s stay.

The time was nearing the evening hour.

As we unpacked the car and headed inside.

Strong storms were expected in the area.

A hot and cold front were about to collide.

My phone vibrated wildly in alarm.

The notification rang loud and long in its song,

Tornado Emergency issued for Kansas

until 7:00PM.” We hoped they were wrong.

We saw the latest tracks and we knew that

we would soon be in the path of the storm.

We made the decision to flee immediately.

The sirens in the city were beginning to warn.

We decided to go to the Oak Park Mall.

Others had made the same decision too.

The western sky looked dark and mean,

As the tornado rapidly grew.

Just as quickly, the funnel disappeared.

After leaving the shelter, we looked to the east.

We saw spinning clouds just 50ft above the ground.

The EF-4 tornado was unforgettable to say the least.
