Wings of Fire: Talons of Power

Tui T. Sutherland

Book page: the entire book

Summary: when Darkstalker escapes his stone prison Turtle makes himself unperceivable to him. He follows him to the academy and watches him as he befriends everyone there with exception of quibli and takes turtle’s sister as his student. When darkstalker goes to return to the nightwing kingdom quibli and turtle make a way to communicate with each other and turtle follows darkstalker. Later turtle and his sister get in an animus fight and darkstalker senses it and summon them to him, soon after darkstalker notices turtle’s spell and takes him as prisoner.

Response: this book was not only used as a way to further the plot but also for turtles character growth. During the start of the book turtle only really cared about himself and his friends but didn’t have the courage to do anything to help them. This is why turtle always feels he is useless but he eventually musters the courage to try and help quibli take down darkstalker. Most of the book centers on this idea of turtle having more and more courage to do things that he knows that he should do but usually wouldn’t do. The climax of the book shows his evolution the best. It is revealed that turtle is the one who gave his sister animus power to make her the center of attention instead of him. This ended up with his sister being used as a weapon for the war and he hated himself for giving her powers but he never had the courage to take them away. Now after all of his adventures he undid his wrongs and took away her powers showing that he can have some courage when whatever is happening is important to him.
